On the night of May 1, the gang had allegedly struck at the house of former sarpanch Mange Ram in Gadoli village and decamped with gold and cash over Rs30 lakh.

Acting on a tip-off, Gurgaon police’s Bilaspur crime branch team, led by sub-inspector Surender Singh, arrested Jangbahadur Singh, alias Jangu, and Satish, both residents of Nilakheri village in Guna district of Madhya Pradesh. While both are repeat offenders, Jangu has 15 cases registered against him in Guna, and a reward of Rs11,000 on his arrest.

Police said Jangu had escaped from police custody in Guna in 2013 and has been on the run since then.

“The arrest of the two men has helped crack the theft case that took place in the house of former Gadoli sarpanch Mange Ram. We are on the trail of the four other people involved in the theft and those who received the stolen items,” said Sumit Kuhar, deputy commissioner of police (DCP), crime.

As per officials, the two belong to a larger group that mainly strikes within 3 to 4km of railway tracks. “They mostly carry tools to break into houses, and each gang member has a specific role. They mostly target houses on the main road,” said Kuhar.

Despite the arrest, police admitted that it is very tough to recover the stolen items. They said all such material is sent to the gang members’ native villages in Madhya Pradesh to be safely disposed of.

Referring to their modus operandi, sub-inspector Surender Singh, in-charge, Bilaspur crime branch, said the gang used weapons such as ‘gulel’ (slingshot) to injure the victims.

“In Bajghera, the burglary failed as the house owner woke up, but he was hit by a stone with the gulel. He had to get
seven stitches on the head,” said Singh.

The arrest of Jangu and his associate follows the arrest of another repeat offender Rampujan Singh by the Bilaspur crime branch last week.
