Undertrial attacked by fellow inmates inside Gurugram’s Bhondsi jail, stable

An undertrial was allegedly assaulted in his cell by fellow inmates in Bhondsi jail on Thursday night, police said on Sunday.

Police said the undertrial was identified as Anil Chand, who is in jail for alleged involvement in a murder case, registered at Farrukhnagar police station in December 2016.

Umesh Kumar, station house officer (SHO), Bhondsi police station, said that Chand, in his statement, said that the attack was ‘unprovoked’.

“He claimed that he was sitting on the bed in barrack 3B when three inmates allegedly started abusing and beating him,” Kumar said.

“After the commotion was heard by guards on night duty, the victim was taken to the hospital in the jail complex. His condition is now stable,” Tyagi said.

According to Chand’s statement in the FIR lodged at Bhondsi police station on Saturday, he was left severely injured and was “unable to walk properly” after the attack.

Police said the attackers have been identified by their first names — Anil, Amit and Ashok.

A case was registered against the accused under sections 323 (punishment for voluntarily causing hurt), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of Indian Penal Code, police said.

On July 31, an inmate was injured after he was assaulted by three other inmates with a sharp object on the jail premises. On July 12, two jail inmates had landed in the jail hospital after five of them fought with broken plates on the jail premises.
