Sour power: The Poles believe in a full-blown ‘sour’ attack on the stomach to cure the morning-after woes. They’ve two interesting remedies — the first, drinking a glassful of soured milk, and the second, having pungent pickle brine.

Umeboshi: The Japanese have a sour and salty recipe, too — pickled ume. These fruits are extremely high in citric content and have traditionally been used as cures for indigestion, nausea and hangovers.

Rollmops: These sour German snacks are made with pickled or marinated herring fillets rolled around pieces of gherkin and onion.

Ciorba de potroace: A sour soup that Romanians swear by. It is made of chicken giblets boiled together with carrots, onion, rice, parsley and borsch.

A hearty breakfast: In many countries, lining the stomach with a hearty, greasy breakfast full of proteins, minerals and vitamins is seen as a surefire remedy.

Hair of the dog that bit you: Beat like with like — that is, have alcohol to blot symptoms of the previous night’s bingeing — is what this remedy calls for. The drink of choice is Bloody Mary — vodka, tomato juice and Tabasco sauce. But the relief is only temporary, because now your liver has more alcohol to deal with!

Prairie oyster: All you need is a raw egg, salt, pepper and a dash of Tabasco or Worcestershire sauce. Put it all in a glass and down it in one go, making sure the yolk doesn’t break. If that doesn’t work, nothing will.
