A Georgian doctor of Indian origin in his review of 15 years on lasik surgery has discovered that this procedure is extremely beneficial, provided the patients show confidence in it.

Dr. Balamurali Ambati, an ophthalmologist and corneal specialist at the Medical College of Georgia, found 94 percent of patients participating in major trials across the country having at least 20/20 vision following the surgery that reshapes the cornea.

The cornea is the front part of the eye that works with the lens to focus light onto the retina.

He also discovered that 98 percent of patients in major trials had 20/25 vision or better, which suggested that they could read one less line on the eye chart.

During the course of his research, nearly all patients interviewed by him said that they would recommend lasik surgery to a friend.

Dr. Ambati's findings on outcomes and quality of vision, which have been published in the recent issue of Current Opinions in Ophthalmology, indicates that most reasons for patient's discontent could be resolved by educating him/her before surgery.

Patients should be made aware of the procedure's limitations in advance, to help avoid dissatisfaction later, Dr. Ambati said.

"Success is more than 20/20; overall quality of vision and patient satisfaction are essential," he added.
