Excess weight or even the lack of it can get people worried. Many have spent long hours at gyms and at dietician’s chambers to attain the ideal body weight for their height. We take a look at some individuals who have dealt with weight issues and have ultimately realised that the two-digit figures are nothing more than troubles in their heads.
20, student, 5 ft 9 in; 88 kg
I was bullied throughout my growing-up years. I always wanted to participate in fashion shows and dance events, but because of my weight, I was never given a chance, which eventually made me conscious. Gradually, I realised that more than weight, it is an individual’s personality that matters, which includes your presence of mind, a charismatic smile and confidence. If you have all that, job interviews and college selections won’t prove to be hurdles. Besides, if weight really mattered that much, we wouldn’t have celebrities like Saroj Khan or Adele achieving success the way they do.

I have had my share of bullying when I was young. My friends called me moti (fat). But, I took it all in my stride and excelled in sports like kabbadi and cricket. I believe that if you are physically fit, you do not need to worry about your weight. People with weight issues worry the most when they reach marriageable age, but I got lucky as my better half didn’t mind my extra kilos. I was a teacher for several years, and one must remember that qualification and a positive personality is of utmost importance during any job interview. I keep myself fit by exercising regularly and walking.

My relatives have always taunted me by saying, “Don’t your parents feed you anything?” Though, I always felt like punching them, I learnt to ignore the comments. On the other hand, there are people who are curious about how in spite of eating to my heart’s content, I never gain weight. I realise that, later on, when opting for an arranged marriage, there might be hindrances in finding a partner due to my weight, but I believe it is your personality that attracts people and not your weight.

I have never been brutally bullied, though I have been subjected to the more-than-occasional jibe from relatives and friends. I was once told that I couldn’t play football because I’d be bullied on the field, but when I started learning the game, I realised there were ways of getting around that problem by being fast. My weight actually helped me with speed. Though at family gatherings, almost everyone seems to be overtly concerned about my health. Occasionally, I wish I could give it back to my family but mostly, ignorance is bliss.
