Marvel superhero flick Black Panther has become the highest opening Hollywood debut superhero film in India. The film has opened to approximately Rs 15 crore weekend at the Indian box office. This is also the biggest opening for any Hollywood film in India in 2018. Trade analyst Taran Adarsh has tweeted the film’s business figures.
#BlackPanther emerged the first choice of moviegoers... Fared well in its opening weekend... Thu previews + Fri 5.60 cr, Sat 6.65 cr, Sun 7.10 cr. Total: ₹ 19.35 cr Nett BOC… Gross BOC: ₹ 24.81 cr. India biz... Note: Hindi + English.— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) February 19, 2018
Black Panther, starring Chadwick Boseman in the lead role, opened to mostly positive reviews on February 16. The Disney-Marvel movie received the fifth-biggest opening of all time by raking in a whopping $192 million (Rs 1239.45 crore) in the first weekend.
The Ryan Coogler-directorial has blown away the record for the largest opening for an African-American director which belonged to F Gary Gray and The Fate of the Furious, which opened to $98 million (Rs 632.63 cr) last April, reports CNN.
Black Panther set a new record for a February opening, besting Deadpool, which started with $132.4 million and $152.2 million for the same three- and four-day weekend in 2016.
It’s also the third-biggest opening for a superhero movie: The Avengers opened with $80 million and Avengers: Age of Ultron opened with $84 million.
Black Panther is the first Marvel film to be led by a person of colour -- Chadwick Boseman -- and featuring a virtually all-black cast with Michael B Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira, with Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman being a few exceptions.
On the other hand, Bollywood film Aiyaary that released alongside Black Panther, failed to register any substantial number at the ticket window. The Sidharth Malhotra-starrer has gathered Rs 11.70 crore in first three days.
#Aiyaary fell flat on Sun... Growth in biz was missing... Weekend biz is lower than #AGentleman [₹ 13.13 cr] and #Ittefaq [₹ 16.05 cr]... Overall, lacklustre... Fri 3.36 cr, Sat 4.04 cr, Sun 4.30 cr. Total: ₹ 11.70 cr. India biz.— taran adarsh (@taran_adarsh) February 19, 2018
