Charlize Theron has hired the scriptwriters of The Departed for the US adaptation of South Korean thriller Sympathy for Lady Vengeance, reports Deadline.com.
First announced in 2008, the project is now back on track. Theron, who will be involved as producer and actress, called up William Monahan to adapt the Asian flick to Hollywood standards. Monahan seems like the right candidate for that job: he earned an Oscar for best adaptation of a foreign film in 2007 for the script of Scorcese's The Departed, based on the Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs.
The new film will be based on the 2005 film also known as Lady Vengeance, which is centered around a woman who plots and executes her revenge after having been wrongly imprisoned for a child's murder. Directed by Park Chan-wook, it capped a trilogy that started with Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance and Old Boy, which earned the Grand Prize at the 2004 Cannes Festival.
