From Spider-Man: Homecoming, the third Planet of the Apes movie and the return of Christopher Nolan, here are 5 films you should look forward to this July.hollywood Updated: Jul 02, 2017 09:34 IST
We’re bang in the middle of the summer movie season, that time of the year when the biggest blockbusters flood our theatres and billions of dollars are on the line. So far, it’s been a rather disappointing year, at least as far as sequels are concerned.
Transformers: The Last Knight, Pirates of the Caribbean: Salazar’s Revenge, Baywatch, and Tom Cruise’s The Mummy - all failed critically, and some would say even commercially. But there have been several winners, too. Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol 2, Fast and Furious 8, and Wonder Woman were all success stories.
And July promises to be an eventful month, with some of the biggest movies of the slated for release. Here’s a quick list:
July 7: Spider-Man: Homecoming
Marvel’s biggest superhero is coming home. Starring Tom Holland, the film marks the first solo outing for Spidey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, after a landmark deal was struck between Sony and Marvel for the character to appear in the decade-old series.
July 14: War for the Planet of the Apes
One of the finest blockbuster trilogies, since the legendary Dark Knight series, comes to a conclusion this year, and the early buzz is rapturous. Director Matt Reeves (who will move on to direct The Batman after this), and Andy Serkis have quietly changed the game over the last couple of years, and if the comparisons to Apocalypse Now that some are making are justified, then this is one movie that can’t get here sooner.
July 21: Dunkirk
Speaking of the Dark Knight Trilogy, we’re getting a new Christopher Nolan film in just two weeks. How great is that? After the incredible success of his Batman trilogy, Inception, and Interstellar, virtually everything he touches is automatically an event. Dunkirk is his first war movie, and going by the trailers, it’s going to be unlike any other war film we’ve seen.
July 21: Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
Dunkirk will have stiff competition from Valerian, directed by Luc Besson, and based on the famed French graphic novel series about inter-dimensional secret agents. Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevigne star in what looks to be the one of the most visually extravagant films in recent memory – and that’s what the early buzz is highlighting.
July 28: Atomic Blonde
Directed by David Leitch (one half of the directing team behind the first John Wick movie, and the man who will bring us Deadpool 2), Atomic Blonde looks like yet another stunning action film, shot in the same distinct style of John Wick. Starring Charlize Theron, and James McAvoy, this one could be the month’s dark horse.
