According to a new report, Idris Elba is the front-runner to replace Daniel Craig as James Bond after Craig’s tenure ends in 2019.

When the people on the internet come together, they can achieve great things. Through sheer will, fans ensured six seasons of the cult TV sitcom Community and a sequel to the small-scale superhero film Kick-Ass. And now, if new reports are to be believed, everyone’s favourite (including George Clooney’s) choice to play James Bond, Idris Elba, might actually be in the running for the job.

According to a report on The Independent, Equalizer 2 director Antoine Fuqua had a conversation with Bond producer Barbara Broccoli, who said that the time was right for a black Bond, with Elba as front-runner. Fuqua felt strongly about Elba’s chances, and said, “Idris could do it if he was in shape. You need a guy with physically strong presence. Idris has that.”

Of course, Elba himself has denied - on several occasions - that he has been approached for the gig, but that was a while ago. Since then, many names have been floated for the part. Former Bond Pierce Brosnan said that Tom Hardy would make for the perfect Bond, while Tom Hiddleston, Henry Cavill and Michael Fassbender have all been thrown into the mix.

After the release of 2015’s Spectre, Daniel Craig said that he would rather slit his wrists than play Bond again. Broccoli and her brother Michael G Wilson were said to have had conversations with several actors, but the talks have since been reported to be nothing more than a negotiation tactic to lure Craig back. The actor confirmed in 2017 that he would return for a fifth and final film, due out in 2019. Danny Boyle has been chosen to direct the as-yet-untitled film.

It has been reported that the actor will take home a cool £50 million for the role. That’s Rs 450 crore.

“We couldn’t be more thrilled than to bring the next 007 adventure to the big screen, uniting the incomparable Daniel Craig with the extraordinary vision of Danny Boyle,” the producers said in a statement.
