John Krasinski and Chris Evans have been good friends for years.

John Krasinski is well on his way to becoming a Hollywood leading man, but his stardom could have arrived a decade earlier had he been cast as Captain America in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Krasinski was in the final running for the role, which eventually went to Chris Evans.

In an interview to Variety, Krasinski, who found fame during his time on the beloved sitcom The Office, said that he remembers getting the phonecall from his agent. “My agent called and said, ‘They’re going to go with Chris Evans,’” Krasinski said. “And I remember I said, ‘Yeah, look at him. He’s Captain America.’”

Krasinski said that he got the call on his wife Emily Blunt’s birthday, and she even offered to cancel their dinner plans. But he wouldn’t allow it. “I said, ‘It’s Chris Evans. Of course, we’re going to dinner.’”

But 2018 has been a big year for Krasinski. He directed and starred in A Quiet Place, which has gone on to gross more than $300 million worldwide. A sequel to the film has already been announced. Krasinski will next lead Amazon’s Jack Ryan series, due out later this month.

Fans have expressed their interest in having him join the MCU, with some even suggesting he play Mr Fantastic in a Fantastic Four film. “Oh yeah, the Fantastic Four. I would love that!” Krasinski told ScreenRant. Interestingly, even Emily Blunt was almost cast in a Marvel movie. Scheduling issues prevented her from playing Black Widow in Iron Man 2 - a role that eventually went to Scarlett Johansson - and Peggy Carter in Captain America: The First Avenger.

With Disney’s takeover of 20th Century Fox’s assets, the Fantastic Four could very well make their debut in the Marvel Universe. But until then, we have Avengers 4 to look forward to early next year. The film will mark Chris Evans’ - who has also played the Human Torch in two previous Fantastic Four movies - potential final appearance as Steve Rogers.
