Hollywood star Johnny Depp has reportedly signed on to play the role of a real-life criminal, James 'Whitey' Bulger in biopic Black Mass. Bulger was a former FBI informant who became one of the FBI's 10 most wanted fugitives. He was arrested in 2011 after 16 years on the run, reported Deadline.

Depp likes to experiment with his roles and has earlier played a negative character.

Depp, 50, reportedly dropped out of Black Mass last year as he apparently wanted to be paid more.

Tom Hardy is said to be in talks to play John Connolly, an FBI agent and childhood friend of Bulger's, who ended up in prison for alerting Bulger that he was about to be indicted.

This is not the first time Depp is playing a negative character. He played John Dillinger in the 2009 film Public Enemies.
