Last week, the sequel about the popular sleuth, played by Robert Downey Jr. with costar Jude Law, took $29.6 million, which Underworld in 3D and IMAX could surpass.

Directed by Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, the action horror films also stars Stephen Rea (V for Vendetta) and Michael Ealy (2 Fast 2 Furious).

Underworld Awakening opens in more than 30 territories around the world including in Asia, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, Russia, the UK and North America. The debut also includes 50 IMAX digital theaters internationally.

Steven Soderbergh's Haywire could open big this weekend in about a dozen cinemas around the world. The thriller stars mixed martial artist Gina Carona as a black ops soldier along with Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor and Antonio Banderas.
