Three family members of a 19-year-old pregnant woman were arrested for their alleged involvement in her murder in Assam’s Cachar district on Saturday, police said.

According to police, the woman’s body with her throat slit was found at the Shibpur part II area of Lakhipur on March 10. “The parents of the victim are prime suspects in the case, and her younger brother has also been arrested,” a police officer said.

Lakhipur sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) Kulapradeep Bhattacharya said after the police found her body, it used sniffer dogs to track her house.

“The woman’s parents gave confusing statements that mismatched. We found more proof against them as we investigated further,” Bhattacharya said.

Postmortem revealed that the woman was eight-month pregnant, police said, adding that the foetus died in the womb.

The victim’s body was buried on Friday after police handed it over to the family members, but was taken out on Saturday for additional investigation, police said.

Police said the father of the woman told them that a boy who had proposed her for marriage could have impregnated her. Further probe is on, police added.
