Seven people, including three women, were killed in an explosion at a firecracker manufacturing unit in Tamil Nadu’s Kancheepuram district on Wednesday.
Police said that five people died on the spot and 15 others were injured and rushed to Kancheepuram’s government hospital. “Of the 15, two died at the hospital. So the death toll is seven as of now,” said an official, who did not want to be named.
Officials said that fire tenders and ambulances were immediately rushed to the blast scene. Kancheepuram district collector M Aarthi, deputy police inspector general P Pakalavan and police superintendent M Sudhakar were at the spot overseeing the rescue operations.
Locals also rushed to the spot and began carrying injured people in autos before the ambulance arrived after the explosion post-noon.
