Jayakumar, who is lodged in Trichy districtjail for two weeks, is likely to walk out of prison in the coming days.

Justice A D Jagadish Chandira, in his order, directed Jayakumar to fulfil the conditions to stay in Tiruchy for two weeks and appear before the Cantonment police station every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and then appear before the Central Crime Branch (CCB) of Greater Chennai Police.

“In the case on hand, though serious offences have been alleged against the petitioner, no injury to any one is reported,” the court said in its orders. “The petitioner being an Ex Minister and considering the factum of change of regime, there is no question of probability of tampering with any witness or apprehension of any threat to the complainant.”

The AIADMK leader was arrested by the police on February 20 over the first case relating to assaulting and parading half-naked a Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) cadre for allegedly attempting to cast a bogus vote in a booth at Royapuram during local body polls a day before. Subsequently, an arrest was also made in a road blockade case.

The latest case pertains to a property dispute between Jayakumar, his son-in-law Naveen Kumar and another family member. CCB had booked Jayakumar on charges of land-grabbing on February 25.

Jayakumar is one of the most vocal and visible leaders of Tamil Nadu’s principal opposition AIAMDK. The party protested against his arrest, describing it as DMK’s political agenda to foist against him.
