A 26-year-old man from Bihar was killed and four others were injured after a furnace used to melt metal exploded at a private steel melting factory in the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) industrial park in neighbouring Tiruvallur district on Tuesday, police said.

According to police, the deceased suffered severe burn injuries in the explosion, while the four injured workers, all from Bihar, sustained minor injuries. The accident occurred around 10 am.

“Two fire engines were pressed into service and doused the flames within an hour. The victim died on the spot due to impact of the blast,” a senior fire department official said.

The injured were admitted to the district government hospital for treatment, an investigating officer at the SIPCOT police station said.

The official said the body had been sent to the government hospital in Ponneri for postmortem examination.
