Chhattisgarh govt orders magisterial probe into farmer’s death

Two days after a 68-year-old farmer died during a protest by people affected by land acquisition for the new capital city of the state, the Chhattisgarh government ordered a magisterial probe into the death, an official said on Sunday.
Saurabh Kumar, Raipur Collector, issued an order in this connection, on Saturday evening, ordering a probe under the additional district magistrate of Raipur.
“The terms of reference of the probe include under what circumstances the death of farmer Siyaram Patel took place,” the order issued by the Collector stated.

The farmers of 27 villages which fall under Nava Raipur Atal Nagar in Raipur district have been agitating under the banner of Nayi Rajdhani Priyojna Prabhavit Kisan Kalyan Samiti (NRPPKKS) since January in support of their various demands including better rehabilitation and compensation.
To address the demands of farmers, the state government had constituted a cabinet sub-committee which had accepted six of their eight demands last month, a government official said.
A statement issued by the state public relations department early this month has stated, NRANVP has issued orders for the implementation of six recommendations made by the cabinet sub-committee for the welfare of Nava Raipur project hit farmers.
The cabinet sub-committee had made recommendations after holding talks with protesting farmers, it said.
The recommendations include allotment of land title for residential land lease deed for an area between 1200 to 2500 square feet as per the eligibility, recruitment of 60 per cent employees from the affected villages in the tender-based services of NRANVP, allotment of 75 per cent of the commercial shops in various sectors of Nava Raipur to project-affected families at the establishment cost through lottery system, exemption from taking no-objection certificate for the purchase and sale of land in villages falls in layer-1 of the city.
