The incident, coming ahead of railway minister Suresh Prabhu's visit here on June 10, has caused embarrassment to top railway officers who are camping here and monitoring arrangements for the visit. The wall was constructed on a platform of the station as part of preparations for Prabhu's programme here.
The victim, Palak Kumari, daughter of Mitilesh Pandey of Hussaini village in the Kesaria police station area of East Champaran district, was waiting to board a Muzaffarpur-bound train.
Of the three injured, Anjali Kumari, 10, and Ankush, 3, have been referred to Patna for better treatment, while 6-year-old Akash Kumar, Anjali’s brother, is undergoing treatment in the Motihari Sadar hospital.
Babudham station master Chandeshwar Prasad said all trains scheduled to depart from platform number 1 were cancelled. Train services will resume only after the rubble was cleared, he said.
He added that the wall was erected to give the platform a facelift ahead of the minister's visit. When asked about the reason behind the sudden collapse, he said the wall was newly constructed and the soil beneath it caved in. Eyewitness, however, said the wall collapsed as substandard materials were used in its construction.
During his visit, Prabhu will inaugurate the Saharsa-Banmakhi broad gauge line from Motihari.
