Severe cyclonic storm may impact Tripura, Government prepares for emergency response

With the Cyclonic Storm "Remal," now centred over the Bay of Bengal intensifying into a Severe Cyclonic Storm, urgent preparatory measures across Tripura are being put in place.

The storm, expected to bring maximum sustained wind speeds of 110-120 kmph with gusts up to 135 kmph, is likely to make landfall around 11 pm on Sunday near Khepupara and Sagar Island.

In anticipation of the storm's impact, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) have issued advisories predicting increased rainfall and heavy winds in Tripura from the night of May 26 to May 29. The state is bracing for heavy rainfall and gusty winds in isolated areas during this period.

Following the advisories, the Revenue Department of Tripura issued instructions to District Magistrates and Collectors on May 24 to initiate preparatory measures. The Secretary of Revenue (RR&DM) is in constant communication with district officials to ensure comprehensive mitigation efforts. State and District Emergency Operation Centres are operating 24x7 to manage the situation.

Union Minister of Earth Sciences Kiren Rijiju on Sunday shared an update on Severe Cyclonic storm 'Remal', which is likely to make landfall between Bangladesh and adjoining West Bengal coasts by midnight of Sunday with maximum sustained wind speed of 110-120 kilometres per hour gusting to 135 kmph, according to the Met department.

"The Severe Cyclonic Storm "Remal" (pronounced as "Re-Mal") over North Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards, with a speed of 07 kmph during past 06 hours and lay centered at 0830 hrs IST of today, the 26th May, 2024 over North Bay of Bengal near latitude 19.8°N and longitude 89.3°E about 260 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh), 310 km south of Mongla (Bangladesh), 240 km south-southeast of Sagar Islands (West Bengal) and 280 km south-southeast of Canning (West Bengal)," Rijiju said in a post on 'X'.

The cyclone has a maximum wind speed of 90-100 kmph gusting to 110 kmph and is expected to intensify further.

Cyclone Remal LIVE Updates: Indian Navy initiates preparatory actions

The Indian Navy has initiated preparatory actions, following existing Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), to mount a credible Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) response in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal.

Coast on the intervening night of May 26 and 27. The situation is being closely monitored at Naval Headquarters, with comprehensive preparatory actions being undertaken by the Headquarters of Eastern Naval Command.

Remal, declared a severe cyclonic storm, was moving northwards over Bay of Bengal and was likely to intensify and cross between Khepupara in Bangladesh and Sagar Island at the West Bengal coast around midnight on Sunday, the Indian Meteorological Department said in a bulletin in the afternoon.

Remal was likely to make landfall at Mongla in Bangladesh. Its maximum sustained speed would be 110-120 kmph gusting to 135 kmph, IMD officials in Kolkata said.
