The Shiksha Sanskriti Utthan Nyas has denied suggesting the removal of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore’s works from NCERT textbooks and said they have suggested changes such as removal of non-Hindi and unconstitutional words from Hindi textbooks.

The RSS-affiliate’s secretary, Atul Kothari — who was speaking at an event on Thursday — said they had given suggestions on changes to be made in Hindi, Political Science and History textbooks.

“In Hindi books, the idea is to teach Hindi. But we have English poems, Farsi shair (couplets) and Urdu words. If you can’t find an appropriate word in Hindi, then there is a law on language that says in such cases, words from Sanskrit should be used,” he said.

Kothari also said some unconstitutional words have been used in Hindi books.

“If someone goes to court, NCERT will be in trouble. We have suggested removal of these words,” he said. The secretary said students are being taught about the history of attackers, which needs to change.

On being asked by a speaker if Mughals have been over glorified in textbooks, Kothari said, “The book praises Akbar and Mahmud Ghazni. Why aren’t our Subhas Chandra Bose, Madan Mohan Malviya there? ...”
