CPI(M) reveals why the Left ditched DMK to support Vijay's TVK in Tamil Nadu

DMK urged Left parties to support the AIADMK government, but they chose to back Vijay instead, rejecting an opportunistic alliance with AIADMK.

The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) told the Left parties to support the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) government from the outside, Communist Party of India (Marxist) general secretary MA Baby told HT on Friday. But the Left decided to back actor-turned-politician Vijay instead, he added.

“DMK wanted us to support the AIADMK government. But it would have been an opportunistic alliance,” Baby told HT. He also added that DMK’s plan was for the AIADMK to meet the governor to form the government.

The comment comes amid speculation that the two Dravidian majors could come together in a hung House. Earlier, after the defeat in the Tamil Nadu polls on Monday, the DMK leadership said it would sit on the opposition benches. Asked if the Left will join any TVK-led government, Baby said, “Let TVK govt be formed. Other things come later. No decision on it now.”

In a joint press conference on Friday, the CPI and CPI(M) announced they would not join the government in Tamil Nadu.
