The Congress on Friday demanded an independent probe into a media report that alleged former chief minister BS Yeddyurappa had paid bribes running into hundreds of crores of rupees to senior BJP leaders. The report was based on the alleged contents of a diary that it said, had been with income tax department since 2017.
Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala said it was time the government got the Yeddyurappa diary probed by an independent agency. “If there is no truth in this diary, why isn’t PM Modi ready for an investigation? Now, even the Lokpal is appointed. Why can’t the first independent investigation be on this issue?” Surjewala said.
The Congress spokesperson referred to a report published by news magazine, Caravan as ‘Yeddy diaries’ saying BS Yeddyurappa made payouts to senior BJP leaders during his tenure as Karnataka chief minister.
“There is an allegation of bribe of Rs 1,800 crore on the top BJP leadership,” he said.
Surjewala said, “Prima facie, it is a fit case for the Lokpal to initiate a probe as it involves the leaders who have run the government over the last five years.”
“The diary with BS Yeddyurappa’s signature on it was with the Income Tax Department since 2017. If that is the case, why did Modiji and the BJP did not get it investigated?” he asked.
Responding to the charge, Yeddyurappa said that the documents cited by the Congress are forged. “The Congress party and its leaders are bankrupt of ideas, they are frustrated with growing popularity of the Modi ji, they have lost the battle before it began. I-T Department officials have already proved that the documents are forged and fake,” news agency ANI quoted Yeddyurappa as saying.
Surjewala also said the Congress party had raised the mater in 2017, when the released a video that it claimed, was proof of conversation between Yeddyurappa and late Union minister Ananth Kumar. The two leaders talked about the money being paid to the top leadership of the BJP, he said/
“If there is no truth to this diary then why did the BJP not get an inquiry done on this? If this is true then is this not a first-hand report of BJP’s corruption? Why is there no independent inquiry of this? Now there is also Lok Pal and other independent bodies in place. Chor chowkidar is answerable for this.”
