Union commerce and industry minister Piyush Goyal on early Friday morning called Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi as “a habitual liar” who speaks “falsehoods” and make “baseless allegations” and said under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Indian farmers will always be secure, empowered, and prosperous.

Goyal's recorded video message to the farmers was uploaded early Friday in response to Gandhi’s recorded video in Hindi on social media X, where LoP alleged that “any trade deal that takes away the livelihood of farmers or weakens the food security of the country is anti-farmer”. Gandhi was making reference to the recently concluded India-US framewok agreement for bilateral trade, which will be formally signed after legal scrubbing by March end.

Refuting LoP’s allegations, Goyal said: “Rahul Gandhi ji is a habitual liar. He has no concern for Maa Bharat or the wellbeing of our farmers and youth.”

In a video released today, he (Gandhi) has broken all records of speaking falsehoods and making baseless allegations, Goyal said. “He is misleading our farmers with his fake narrative and trying to provoke our annadatas,” he added.

Goyal said, “He [Gandhi] has never cared for our motherland, nor can we expect him to work for a strong and prosperous future for India. Prime Minister Narendra Modi Ji has always been empathetic towards our kisan brothers and sisters,” he said.

Speaking about the Modi government’s policy and PM’s priorities, Goyal said: “He [PM] has always put the interest of farmers first and taken all decisions to ensure their prosperity. Modi ji has implemented several schemes which have transformed the lives of crores of farmers.”

In the recent trade deal with the United States of America, the interests of farmers have been kept paramount and fully protected, the minister said. “In this agreement, all major crops of our farmers incl. wheat, rice, millets, soyameal, corn, GM food products, spices, potato, have been fully safeguarded. We have also fully protected the interests of farmers producing major fruits including apples,” he said.

India's doors have not been opened to dairy products or poultry, Goyal said. “The truth is that many of our products, including basmati rice, fruits, spices, tea, marine products, and many more will find new markets, increase exports & boost farmers' incomes,” he said.

“We have opened huge markets for cotton textile exports which will increase the demand for cotton manifold, benefiting cotton farmers,” he added.

The minister clarified that “every decision taken in the trade deal is in the best interests of Maa Bharat, and 140 crore Indians” including our farmers and youth. “I don’t think Rahul ji ever cared for the benefit of our farmers or will ever understand what is good for our annadatas. I want to reassure all our farmers that your interests are fully secured today and will always be protected forever,” he said in the video.

“The US trade deal will benefit the farmers with higher export of farm output and increased demand leading to higher prices and prosperity of the farmers,” he said.

He accused Gandhi of peddling lies and said: “Let me tell Mr Rahul Gandhi…No matter how much lies you peddle or attempt to mislead our farmers, or even attempt to discredit the country, a proud, prosperous, powerful, self-reliant, and developed India is assured under Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji's leadership.”
