The Delhi high court on Monday ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to probe an email allegedly sent from the income tax (I-T) department’s e-filing portal to a private firm granting them an adjournment after a senior tax official denied sending the email and said it could be a forgery.

The bench of justices Manmohan and Navin Chawla observed that this was not the only instance where people claimed to have received similar emails. It cannot be a coincidence that similar emails granting adjournments to assessees from the I-T’s e-filing portal were forged, the HC said. “This Court directs the Central agency, namely Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to enquire as to whether the email dated May 31, 2021 had been issued to the petitioner or not, and if so, by whom...," it said.

Three C Homes Pvt Limited, a Noida-based real estate developer, moved HC against a June 1 assessment order by the I-T department, insisting that it was granted an adjournment in an online assessment on May 31.
