IIT Guwahati assistant professor found dead at residential quarters

A 47-year-old assistant professor of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Guwahati was found dead inside the residential quarters of the institute on Friday, police said.

The police identified the deceased as Dr Sameer Kamal, an assistant professor in the department of mathematics at IIT Guwahati. According to the police, Kamal was a resident of New Delhi’s Paschim Vihar.

According to police, they reached the institute after receiving a call from IIT Guwahati and recovered the dead body of the professor after breaking into his room, who was found hanging, as it was locked from the inside.
“His dead body was found hanging and it already started decomposing. The locals complained about a bad smell which was coming from the room,” said the police officials.
Superintendent of police (SSP) of Kamrup district Hitesh Chandra Ray said that they are suspecting this as a case of suicide and an investigation into the matter has been launched.
He said according to postmortem report, the professor died about 2-3 days back.
“It is suspected that the assistant professor died 2-3 days ago. We are still trying to find the reason behind the death,” Ray told HT.
Meanwhile, in a statement issued by the Guwahati IIT authorities issued on Saturday, the institute said, “The body of a man found in one of the residences at IIT Guwahati on Saturday evening has been identified as a faculty of the institute. The institute is trying to establish contact with the family of the deceased.”
“IIT Guwahati expresses its deepest condolences to the family at this time of profound grief. We will cooperate with the police investigation and will also commission an internal investigation on this matter,” the statement read further.
