Karnataka elections Highlights: Congress thinks PM’s seat is reserved for one dynasty, says Modi
The Karnataka Assembly Elections 2018 campaign has turned into a war of words between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Congress president Rahul Gandhi. Live updates.Updated: May 09, 2018 22:15 IST
As the Karnataka assembly election date nears, the campaign is getting intense and attacks are getting sharper with the ruling Congress, the BJP and the Janata Dal (Secular) leaving no stone unturned to win the trust of voters who will cast their votes on May 12.
On the penultimate day of campaigning on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is addressing four rallies and Congress president Rahul Gandhi is holding corner meetings in Bengaluru.

9pm: PM Modi ends his address at Bidar.
8.59pm: Modi asks people to turn on the flashlights on their phones, saying “This a light of vigilance, shining light on Congress’ misdeeds.”
8.58pm: Modi says, “In the coming days, Congress will use every tactic and spread lies. Bundles of forms were found in Bengaluru, money was seized in Badami. You must be vigilant.”
8.55pm: “We need a new Karnataka to build a new India,” says Modi.
8.51pm: Modi says Congress’ work culture is ‘atkana, latkana and bhatkana’.
8.50pm: “Congress keeps asking what Modi has done but it must tell the people of Karnataka what its government has done in the last five years for the people of the state,” PM says.
8.45pm: Modi says his government opened bank accounts for the poor and brought them in financial mainstream. “We are working on ‘jan dhan’ but Congress party works for ‘bhrasht dhan’,” he says.
8.40pm: “We have approved stringent punishments including death penalty for those who commit devilish deeds against women. Such things cannot be tolerated at all,” he says.
8.35pm: Modi says, “Rapists must not be forgiven. But rapes must not be selectively politicised. When public demands justice in these cases, it is not right to lathicharge them.”
8.25pm: “When Bhagat Singh, Batukeshwar Dutt, Veer Savarkar, greats like them were jailed fighting for the country’s independence, did any Congress leader go to meet them? But Congress leaders go and meet the corrupt who have been jailed,” he says.
Modi says Congress leaders believe in photo ops and do not do anything for the country’s betterment.
8.23pm: PM Modi says that the Congress president has pre-announced he will become the prime minister in 2019. “They think that the prime minister’s seat is reserved for just one dynasty,” he says.
“Those who have only seen ‘pariwaarvaad’ and ‘vanshvaad’ do not understand the importance of democracy. That is why they think that no one other than them has the right to become PM. This is an insult to democracy. Only people can decide who will become the PM not ‘naamdaars’,” says Modi.
8.15pm: Modi says Bidar is the land of Anubhava Mantapa of Bhagwan Basaveshwara, which spreads the messages of democracy, women empowerment, women participation and fighting social evils like casteism.
8.11pm: “I met youngsters who would be voting in these elections for the first time. Their energy and enthusiasm is commendable. I urge them to make more and more people aware of voting rights,” says Modi.

7.15pm: After BJP delegation’s meeting with EC officials, Smriti Irani says, “Voter IDs are proof of voter confidence and to reinstate that the elections to Rajarajeshwari constituency must be countermanded. We have put forward this demand to the Election Commission.”
7.14pm: Gandhi remembers veteran actor Dr Rajkumar, whose birth anniversary was observed last month.
7.11pm: Gandhi says that, in 2019, Congress will form government in Delhi and the governments at the Centre and in the state will work together.
7.09pm: Gandhi says, “It is no longer ‘beti padhao’, only ‘beti bachao’ from BJP’s MLAs.”
7.06pm: “BJP is privatising education in all the states it rules. Only the rich can afford to educate their daughters in these states,” he says.
7.05pm: “PM Modi does ‘mann ki baat’. But when women try to convey their ‘mann ki baat’, the BJP and ABVP muzzle their voices,” he says.
7.04pm: Gandhi attacks the PM’s silence on the rapes in Kathua and Unnao, and on the atrocities against Dalits.
7.03pm: “The situation in the country is deteriorating. Atrocities are perpetrated on Dalits, adivasis and minorities,” he says.
6.58pm: “Congress’ chief minister (Siddaramaiah) is the common man’s chief minister, while the BJP’s is of the corrupt man. The two cannot be compared,” Gandhi says.
6.55pm: Referring to the Rafale deal, Gandhi says the Prime Minister paid Rs 1500 crore for the same aircraft for which the Congress had paid Rs 700 crore and also took the contract away from Bengaluru’s HAL and gave it his minister.
6.49pm: The Congress president says the BJP government has not given Bengaluru even a little bit of money and took three years to list it in the Smart City scheme.
6.46pm: Gandhi says that if Bengaluru continues to progress at this rate, it would overtake California as “Silicon Valley no.1”.
6.45pm: “America’s president said that the only countries that can compete with them is India and China. He would not have said that were it not for Bengaluru,” he says.
6.41pm: Rahul Gandhi addresses a gathering in Bengaluru. “The whole country looks to Bengaluru for progress,” he says.
6.10pm: At his rally, PM Modi says, “Why does the Congress need fake voter IDs? What is the Congress trying to do in Karnataka?”
He says the Congress is afraid of technology and that is why it rakes up the issue of EVM tampering each election. “The 21st century is about embracing technology. We have used technology in the working of the government, which has helped bring transparency,” Modi says.
6.08pm: A BJP delegation comprising Union ministers Smriti Irani, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, JP Nadda, Dharmendra Pradhan and SS Ahluwalia reaches Election Commission over the voter ID issue, reports ANI.
6.01pm: “This is a very serious matter. Two people have been arrested as of now, there is a possibility of more arrests. Case is currently being investigated,” Kumar says.
5.59pm: On being asked about countermanding the election, the CEO says the decision is up to the Central Election Commission. Sanjiv Kumar says no one had broken into its software system and no new ID cards have been created.
“Prima facie it is very clear that someone was surveying each house, identifying vulnerable people and collecting the voter IDs,” Kumar says.
5.55pm: Meanwhile, at a press conference, the Karnataka Election Commission says that the stash of voter IDs found was a matter of inquiry and investigation.
Karnataka’s CEO Sanjiv Kumar confirmed that photos and pamphlets of a candidate were found in the apartment where the voter IDs were kept but urged media to not jump to conclusions.
5.43pm: The Prime Minister says he fails to understand why ‘only Modi’ is the agenda of the Congress only Modi.
“The Chief Minister was campaigning for a Congress candidate whose name is also Narendra... but he only kept saying Narendra Modi and praised Narendra Modi too. The truth seems to have come out,” says PM, referring to Siddaramaiah’s gaffe on Tuesday.
5.40pm: “Congress is out of the mind and hearts of people. People have rejected their politics,” says Modi.
5.36pm: PM Modi begins address at rally in Belagavi. The Prime Minister is not using a translator for this speech.
5.31pm: “Siddaramaiah government will resort to all kinds of unscrupulous activities in election. Their ministers are distributing money to influence voters. Fake voter ID Cards were found. EC should take this seriously. Trends are in favour of BJP. We will form government with absolute majority,” says Yogi Adityanath.
5.25pm: A BJP delegation comprising Union Ministers Smriti Irani, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi, JP Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan will meet the Election Commission today at 6 pm over the issue of voter IDs found in the Bengaluru flat, reports ANI.
5.06pm: Rahul Gandhi visited the Dargah of Hazrat Tawakkal Mastan in Bengaluru. The Congress president also offered prayers at the Anjaneya Swamy Temple in the city.
5.01pm: “Congress and JD(S) are supporting each other. This just shows their desperation to win the elections. People are going to vote for the BJP on May 12 and Congress is going to lose,” Amit Shah says.
4.55pm: “We’re going to form government in Karnataka with full majority and are committed to bringing development. Who is Congress to accuse us in the voter ID scam? Their corporator has been arrested, it is their deed,” says Amit Shah during the roadshow.
4.44pm: BJP’s Sambit Patra says, “She (Nanjamari) was a BJP corporator. For the past 15 years she has no link with BJP. We demand investigation and immediate countermanding of election in Rajarajeshwari Nagar constituency.”
4.42pm: Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala says, “Owner of the flat (in Jalahalli, where voter IDs were found) is Manjula Nanjamari. She was a BJP corporator from ‘97-’02 and continues to be a prominent leader of the BJP. In the last 24 hours, she has been disowned by Karnataka BJP in-charge Prakash Javadekar.”
4.30pm: Deputy Election Commissioner, Chandra Bhushan Kumar, to visit Karnataka, reports ANI.
2.50pm: Modi ends his address at Chikmagalur. He will address a public rally in Belagavi at 4pm.
2.45pm: What did the Congress government in Karnataka do to tackle water shortage the farmers face? They did not complete the Upper Bhadra project which the BJP had initiated earlier: Narendra Modi.

2.17pm: Rahul Gandhi says that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi will pay his tribute to BR Ambedkar, he stays quiet when people from SC and ST communities are attacked. “People will throw out Narendra Modi and the BJP from Karnataka first, followed by Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh,” Gandhi said.

12.42pm: BJP chief Amit Shah says the Siddaramaiah government has become a symbol of corruption. His government is known as 10% commission government, says Shah.
12.35pm: Supreme Court will hear on Thursday Rashtriya Hindu Sena chief Pramod Muthalik’s plea seeking directions to Election Commission to delete alleged appeal seeking votes in name of religion in Congress manifesto.
Muthalik also seeks disqualification of Congress candidates who allegedly seek votes in name of religion in Karnataka elections, according to a PTI alert.
12.24pm: BJP chief Amit Shah addresses a rally in Tumkur, says the BJP will form government with absolute in the state.
12.08pm: Amidst row over recovery of fake voter cards from a flat in Raj Rajeshwari Nagar constituency of Karanataka, BJP leader and owner of the flat Manjula Nanjamari’s son rebuffed allegations that he was the tenant of the flat, ANI reports.
12.05pm: Rashtriya Hindu Sena chief Pramod Muthalik has moved Supreme Court claiming that Congress’ manifesto seeks vote in the name of religion and thus all Congress candidates should be disqualified from contesting the Karnataka assembly elections.

Modi refers to senior Congress leader M Veerappa Moily’s tweet suggesting money plays a role in his party deciding who gets the ticket for upcoming elections in Karnataka. Moily, however, denied posting it, saying: “I have not done it”.

* The Election Commission at a press conference on the early hours of Wednesday filed an FIR on finding counterfoils and 9,746 voters ID cards in the Rajarajeshwari Nagar assembly seat in the southern suburb.
* EC press meet came after a series of tweets by BJP’s Sadanand Gowda who alleged that 20,000 voter IDs were under the control of the Congress candidate from Rajarajeshwari Nagara, Munirathna Naidu, and demanded an investigation into the matter.
* Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala alleged that the flat where the voter IDs were found belonged to a BJP leader Manjula Nanjamari who has rented the apartment to her son who contested the 2015 BBMP (Bengaluru civic body) elections on a BJP ticket.
* On Tuesday, UPA chairperson and former Congress president Sonia Gandhi addressed her first election rally in nearly two years, criticising Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s policies and alleged intolerance while campaigning in Karnataka.
