As many as 18 people were injured in two separate incidents of violence in Kashmir on Thursday.
Four people – including three policemen – were wounded in a grenade attack on a Srinagar police station that afternoon. “Somebody lobbed a grenade into the Safakadal police station compound. Two special police officers, a constable and a civilian were injured in the explosion. Fortunately, none of them are in a critical condition,” said a police officer.
In another incident, 14 people were injured when pellets and tear gas shells were fired in the course of a clash between security personnel and college students in the main town of south Kashmir’s Kulgam district. The students, who hailed from the Government Degree College there, were agitating against the detention of their colleagues by state agencies.
The Kulgam police control room said it has received clear instructions from superintendent of police Shridhar Patil to not interact with the media. Attempts to contact Patil and deputy superintendent of police (operations) Zaheer Abbas were unsuccessful.
The Kulgam chief medical officer said 14 people injured in the clashes were treated at the district hospital. “Most of them were students with pellet injuries. One of the students, who was hit in the eye, was referred to Srinagar hospital,” he added.
Police later released a press statement. “Miscreants pelted stones at Kulgam market, forcing shopkeepers to down shutters. Police reached the spot and chased the miscreants away. Nobody suffered serious injuries, and the shops were reopened soon afterwards. The general public is requested to help police deal with miscreants,” it said.
According to sources, a video journalist covering the clashes was also injured.
