S Saleem allegedly pushed his parents, wife and two children into the canal adjacent to Palair reservoir at Jeella Cheruvu village and later jumped into the water on Tuesday night, a senior police official said.

News agency IANS reported police initially treated it as a case of mass suicide by the family but preliminary investigations revealed that Saleem killed his parents, wife and children before ending his life.

“As per preliminary investigation, Saleem killed his family members and later committed suicide apparently over some family dispute,” Khammam’s commissioner of police Tafseer Iqbal told news agency PTI over the phone.

He said Saleem was apparently disturbed with the family disputes and his father was an alcoholic who used to harass the family members.

A suicide note that was allegedly written by Saleem, in which he referred to some family dispute, was found in his house, the police commissioner said. The note has been sent to a forensic science laboratory for verification, he added.

The bodies of Saleem, his father Shaik Pintoo Saheb (50), mother Mahboob Bi (45), wife Razia (28) and children Shahnaz Begum (8) and Nasreena (4), have been retrieved and sent to Khammam hospital for autopsy.

Palair police sub-inspector Raghu registered a case and started an investigation.
