The home ministry will ask states to promptly crack down on people shown in sting operations by television channels to convert black money into white.
The home ministry advisory to the states will be issued on an initiative of the information & broadcasting (I&B) ministry that wanted the police to act on sting operations by media claiming that demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 were being exchanged with the valid ones against a hefty margin by groups of people illegally.
The I&B ministry said these news reports had also indicated illegal operations in the gold jewellery and real estate sectors where demonetised currency notes were being used.
The ministry had also asked the Delhi Police commissioner to take cognisance of media reports that reveal attempts to negate the purpose of demonetisation – elimination of fake currency and illegitimate cash holding – in appropriate cases.
It had also sent a copy of the sting operations telecast by television channels.
A government official said the home ministry would convey the views during their daily interaction with the state police officers and if required, follow it up with a formal written advisory.
