Monsoon to arrive in Delhi by June 30 or July 1; drizzles expected today: IMD
As per IMD’s seven day forecast for Delhi, light rain and drizzles may occur tonight in some parts, with a yellow alert in place for Wednesday
Rainfall this year is yet to cover large swathes of the country’s key agricultural regions, but the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Tuesday said that conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to advance into the remaining parts of Bihar, some more parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir over the next 24 hours.

However, the advancement of monsoon into Delhi will take place only in the subsequent 48 hours, likely on June 30 or July 1.
“Conditions are favourable for further advancement of monsoon into the remaining parts of Bihar, some more parts of Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir during the next 24 hours,” the IMD said on Tuesday.

While these locations will get covered by June 29, the locations that are likely to see the onset of the monsoon on June 30 and July 1 include the remaining parts of the Arabian Sea and Gujarat, some parts of Rajasthan, remaining parts of Madhya Pradesh, entire Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir, some parts of Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh and entire Delhi.
“We have been monitoring the progress of the monsoon and conditions have now become favourable for it to advance considerably in the next three days or so. Delhi should see the onset by June 30, or [it will be declared] by July 1,” said RK Jenamani, scientist at IMD.
The normal date of the onset of the monsoon for the national capital is June 27, which means the monsoon will be delayed by at least three days this year, akin to last year when it arrived 16 days late – July 13.
As per IMD’s seven day forecast for Delhi, light rain and drizzles may occur tonight in some parts, and there is a yellow alert in place for Wednesday, with ‘light to moderate’ showers accompanied by gusty winds. The main rainfall activity is, however, expected on Thursday (June 30), with an orange alert in place.
“Rain is expected from June 29 in Delhi, but the main activity will occur on June 30. Depending on the progress of the monsoon, it may be declared over Delhi on the same day, or by the next day,” Jenamani added.
Delhi is likely to see a maximum of 41 degrees Celsius today, with humidity levels also expected to remain high. The maximum is expected to reach around 42 degrees on Wednesday. But it is expected to drop to around 38 degrees by Thursday.
The IMD on Monday said monsoon advanced into most parts of Arabian Sea and Gujarat. The northern limit of monsoon (NLM) is currently passing through Deesa, Ratlam, Shivpuri, Rewa and Churk, the weather department said.
