The northeastern state voted on February 27 and around 85.79% polling was recorded. Ahead of the counting, elaborate security arrangements were made in the state- a three-tier cordoning system for counting of EVMs across 16 election districts. Exit polls predicted that the BJP and allies are set to retain power in Nagaland with the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP)-BJP alliance expected to win 42 out of 60 seats while Naga People’s Front (NPF), is expected to win just 6.

Salhoutuonuo Kruse: One of the first women MLA in the Nagaland Assembly
In the straight fight in Western Angami seat of Kohima district, Salhoutuonuo Kruse, who is the nominee of the ruling Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP), polled 7,078 votes while the sitting MLA and Independent candidate Nakhro got just seven votes less.
“It is all God’s providence as the margin was very thin and also the support of the people that I got elected,” she said.
Kruse is the widow of Kevisekho Kruse, a retired government employee who had contested the last Assembly poll on an NDPP ticket from the same seat but lost.
NDPP-BJP combine makes second innings
As predicted by different exit polls, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) combine returned to power comfortably.
Neiphiu Rio is set to become CM for a fifth term. The pre-poll allies who went for a second time seat-sharing formula of 40:20 with the BJP as junior partner, garnered a comfortable majority 37 seats to form the next government. NDPP won 25 out of 40 while BJP managed to retain its old number, 12 out of 20, though with six new faces. NDPP has 10 new faces including the first two female elected members.

Hekhani Jakhalu: First woman MLA in the Nagaland Assembly
By virtue of the result of her constituency being declared earlier in the day, Hekhani Jakhalu became the first woman MLA in the Nagaland Assembly.
She defeated her nearest rival and sitting MLA Azheto Zhimomi of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) by 1,536 votes.
A lawyer by education and social entrepreneur by profession, she is also the founder and chair of YouthNet Nagaland, an organisation working for the uplift of educated unemployed youth in the state to pursue entrepreneurship.

Disappointing: Congress on assembly election results in Nagaland
The Congress on Thursday said the assembly election results in the northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland and Meghalaya were "disappointing" for it. Congress failed to open its account in Nagaland where it fielded candidates in 23 out of 60 seats.
