NPP leader James K Sangma files nomination for Meghalaya’s lone Rajya Sabha seat

He called his candidature a collective decision of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance and said he was honoured to have been unanimously chosen

National People’s Party (NPP) leader James K Sangma on Monday filed his nomination for Meghalaya’s lone Rajya Sabha seat, in the presence of his brother, chief minister Conrad Sangma, pledging to amplify the state’s concerns and push long-pending issues.

He called his candidature a collective decision of the ruling Meghalaya Democratic Alliance and said he was honoured to have been unanimously chosen. “We are here to serve the people of Meghalaya. I will carry out any responsibility entrusted to me.”

He thanked the chief minister, deputy chief ministers, ministers, lawmakers, and alliance partners, including the Bharatiya Janata Party and an Independent legislator, for supporting his candidature.

James K Sangma said it was too early to predict the outcome, but he would feel privileged to represent Meghalaya if elected unopposed.

James K Sangma, a former Meghalaya minister and NPP national vice-president, is regarded as one of the party’s key strategists. He has handled important portfolios, including Home, finance and power in the state government.

The election for 24 Rajya Sabha seats across the country is scheduled for June 18.
