Old notes of Rs 42 lakh face value seized in Gujarat

Gujarat Police found a bag full of demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. The bag had 3,233 scrapped notes of Rs 500 denomination, and 2,589 notes of Rs 1,000 denomination.

Gujarat Police on Tuesday seized demonetised currency notes having face value of Rs 42 lakh and detained two persons travelling in a Maharashtra state transport bus which was on its way from Nasik to Ahmedabad.

“Police received a tip-off that liquor was being illegally transported in a bus and as such were checking buses on the Udhna main road,” said an official from Udhna police station.

During the checking in the early hours, police found a bag full of demonetised currency notes of Rs 500 and Rs 1,000. Two persons who claimed to own the bag have been detained, police said.

The bag had 3,233 scrapped notes of Rs 500 denomination, and 2,589 notes of Rs 1,000 denomination, they said.

Police said that the income tax department was informed about the seizure.
