The police said a team of 50 police personnel, including several dressed in civil attire, were deployed near Mall Mile between 10pm and 1am each night.
The city police detained 150 men for unlawful activities including hooliganism, harassment and drinking liquor in the open under Operation Romeo from MG Road and Sector 29 on Friday and Saturday night. The police said while a majority of persons were released after a ‘stern warning’, 10 people were arrested.
The police said a team of 50 police personnel, including several dressed in civil attire, were deployed near Mall Mile between 10pm and 1am each night.
Usha Kundu, assistant commissioner of police (ACP), crime against women, said, “Over a hundred people were detained on Friday and 50 were detained on Saturday. Seventy people were issued a notice (stranger roll) for verification of their local address and five people were taken into preventive custody under sections 107 and 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC). At least six people were booked under the Excise Act,” Kundu said.
The police said the operation was carried out on MG Road and to a limited extent at the Sector 29 market, where restaurants and microbreweries are located.
Kundu said the drive was conducted over the weekend as part of precautionary measure ahead of the elections. “The police had also received several complaints from the area regarding harassment, cases of drinking in public spaces and hooliganism,” she said.
Last month, Muhammad Akil, police commissioner, had visited Mall Mile, notorious for incidents of open drinking and harassment, and had expressed concern regarding safety of women. Following the visit, the police had launched Operation Romeo and detained at least 125 men for unlawful activities.
