Opposition lawmakers hold protest against suspension of Rajya Sabha members

The suspended Rajya Sabha lawmakers include six from the Congress, two each from the Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena, and one each from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India.

NEW DELHI: Opposition lawmakers, including Rahul Gandhi, held a protest wearing black armbands in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue at the Parliament on Thursday against the suspension of 12 Rajya Sabha members.

The Congress shared a short video of the protest on Twitter with the caption, “Our struggle against the dark intentions of (ruling) BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) continues. Congress has taken up the responsibility of raising the public’s voice.” The lawmakers held banners that read “Save India” and “BJP kills Democracy”.

The suspended lawmakers include six from the Congress, two each from the Trinamool Congress, Shiv Sena, and one each from the Communist Party of India (Marxist) and the Communist Party of India.

Rajya Sabha chairman M Venkaiah Naidu has said the suspension can be revoked if the 12 apologise and show remorse for their “unruly behaviour” during the last session.He urged the government and the Opposition to find a way to end the stalemate.
