Parliament as it happened: Both houses adjourned after uproar by Opposition

The Rajya Sabha got adjourned for an hour over demonetization on Thursday, even as the Lok Sabha is continuing business.

Opposition on Thursday accused the government of “shameless conduct” by refusing to mourn the death of over 100 persons due to hardships caused by demonetisation, as opposition and treasury benches clashed in Rajya Sabha forcing its adjournment minuters after it met for the day.

Before the Parliament proceedings began, Congress vice president Rahul Gandhi lashed out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and alleging that the government’s move to scrap high-value banknotes was benefitting digital wallets such as Paytm while the poor were facing hardship.

2:55 pm: Lok Sabha adjourned for the day.

2:50 pm: “Till December 30 we will normalize the situation. Every day RBI is infusing new notes,” says Arun Jaitley

2:45 pm: “Congress was in power from 2004-14, I challenge them to talk about even one step taken to curb black money in 10 years,” says finance minister Arun Jaitley.

“When the UPA was in power, India was one of the fragile five. Now India is a bright spot. For the three consecutive years. MGNREGA will get 4000 crore. For the first time, Rs 47,000 will be spent in a year.” says Jaitley

2:05 pm: Discussion resumes in Lok Sabha as opposition continues sloganeering.

2 pm: Rajya Sabha adjourned for the day.

12.45pm: Lok Sabha adjourned till 2pm.

12.30pm: “Some mischievous persons are trying to spread wrong rumours about Modiji’s demonetisation decision and the undisclosed income declaration scheme,” said BJP MP Kirit Somaiya in the Lok Sabha.

12noon: Rajya Sabha resumes proceedings.

11.50am: There is no substance in what the Opposition is saying. The protests are a mere photo-op: Venkaiah Naidu outside Rajya Sabha.

11.25am: More than 100 people died post demonetisation, we wanted that they must be paid homage in the Parliament but Govt refused it: Ghulam Nabi Azad in Rajya Sabha.

11.20am: Finance minister Arun Jaitley tried to make his point in the Rajya Sabha, but could not do so amid the din.
