Apart from Pune, voting took place on Thursday (January 15) in major urban centres across the state, including Mumbai, Nagpur, Thane, Navi Mumbai, Nashik, and Pimpri-Chinchwad.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday thanked the “enthusiastic” people of Maharashtra, saying they had blessed NDA's agenda “of public welfare and good governance.”
“The results of various municipal corporation elections show that the bond between the NDA and the people of Maharashtra has become even stronger. The experience of our performance and the vision of development have touched the hearts of the people. I express heartfelt gratitude to all the people of Maharashtra,” PM Modi said in a post on X.
Meanwhile, NCP chief and Maharashtra deputy chief minister Ajit Pawar said the “will of the people is supreme”, adding that he accepts it “with full respect.”

While congratulating and extending his best wishes to the winning candidates, Pawar assured that his party would continue to work with “greater responsibility, honesty, and double the vigor to regain the trust of the people.”
“I express the expectation that all the victorious candidates will prioritize the issues of the people in their respective municipal corporations and accelerate the work of development and public welfare,” Pawar said in a post on X.
He appealed to those who had not emerged victorious to remain dedicated towards working for the people, and keep their welfare at the center.
Pune uses a multi-member ward system. Under this arrangement, each municipal ward elects three or four corporators rather than a single representative. The Pune Municipal Corporation has 41 wards. Each ward elects four corporators, taking the total strength of the general body to 162 members. As a result, voters are required to cast more than one vote.
What was the voting percentage in Pune?
According to the State Election Commission (SEC), Pune recorded a low voter turnout, touching nearly 54 per cent. Meanwhile, the overall voting percentage across all the 29 municipal corporations stood at 41.13 per cent till 3:30 pm. State election commissioner Dinesh Waghmare said that the final polling figures would range between 46-50 per cent.
Key facts about PMC elections 2026
The PMC elections saw 1,165 candidates contesting across 41 wards. A total of 165 seats were available. Over 36 percent of the voters headed to the polls on Thursday to decide the political fate of the candidates.
What happened in 2017?
The last Pune Municipal Corporation election was held on February 21, 2017, and recorded a voter turnout of 55.45 per cent. There were 1,090 candidates in the race.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) won a clear majority, securing 97 seats. The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) won 39 seats, followed by Shiv Sena with 10 and Congress with nine. The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) won two seats, AIMIM secured one, while Independents and others won four seats.
Mukta Tilak of the BJP became mayor, and Navanth Kamble was elected deputy mayor.

Pune election result 2026 live updates: Chandrakant Bhujbal, political analyst and head of the Political Research and Analysis Bureau (PRAB), Pune, said the decline in voter participation was worrying, especially as civic elections were being held after a gap of nearly eight years.
“Voter apathy is clearly visible. Two major factors appear responsible — shortcomings in the Election Commission’s administrative systems and ethical decline in political behaviour,” he said.
Low turnout in PMC is also being attributed to prolonged administrator rule after the elected body’s term ended in 2022, lack of visible civic leadership and voter disconnect from local governance issues.
