Special Investigation Team (SIT) has arrested two more people in connection with the murder of journalist Gauri Lankesh.

Ganesh Miskin and Amit Baddi, both 27, are from Hubballi in northern Karnataka. They were picked up on Sunday by the SIT probing the case and were produced before a magistrate, who remanded them in police custody until August 6, according to the request for their custody.

An SIT official said further details about the two could not be revealed at the moment as it would be prejudicial to the probe.

News agency PTI reported quoting police sources that Baddi and Miskin had helped in recceing the area before Lankesh was shot dead on September 5 last year. Baddi was said to be a goldsmith by profession, while Miskin was into incense stick manufacturing business.

With the arrest of these two, in all nine people have been arrested in connection with the murder of Gauri Lankesh, who was gunned down by motorcycle-borne assailants outside her house in Bengaluru on 5 September 2017.

Last week, the SIT arrested 50-year-old Ayurveda practitioner Mohan Nayak from Dakshina Kannada district. The two fresh arrests are said to be connected to that arrest.

HT had earlier reported that Nayak was suspected to have rented a house in Kumbalagodu on Bengaluru outskirts, where the chief conspirators in the case were supposed to have met, the remand application for Nayak that HT has seen states.

Apart from these three, the SIT has arrested K T Naveen Kumar, Sujith Kumar alias Praveen, Amol Kale, Amit Degwekar, Manohar Yedave and Parashuram Waghmare in connection with the murder.

It is unclear what role Baddi and Miskin played in the murder. Nayak was believed to have met Kale, Degwekar and one Dada alias Nihal, the alleged masterminds behind the conspiracy. Police stumbled upon Mohan Nayak’s alleged role based on a number found in a diary recovered from Kale when he was arrested.
