Soldier shoots himself with service rifle near LoC in Jammu

A soldier allegedly committed suicide by shooting himself with his service rifle inside an army camp near the Line of Control (LoC) in Khour area of Akhnoor sector in Jammu on Monday.

Rifleman Ranbir Singh (28), from Punjab, was on guard duty at Hamirpur Nawan Military Garrison in the Khour area of Akhnoor sector when he shot himself.

A police official from Khour police station said, “Prima facie, it appears that the soldier used his service rifle to end his life. He had pressed the trigger after keeping the nozzle of his gun beneath the chin.”

The jawan’s body was handed over to his unit after completion of medical and legal formalities.

The army has initiated a court of inquiry.
