On Tuesday, the Supreme Court had stayed contempt proceedings against top police officers – Kashmir’s inspector general of police SJM Gillani and Srinagar senior superintendent of police Amit Kumar – for failing to obey a court order to proceed against deputy superintendent of police Yasir Qadri for allegedly gunning down Shabbir Ahmad Mir.
The order, dated August 9, issued by Srinagar district magistrate says that for a “transparent investigation of the case” Mir’s body is to be exhumed. It adds that the chief medical officer shall constitute a team of experts to conduct a post-mortem of the body as required under the law.
The body will also be re-buried following appropriate religious procedure under video coverage.
