Sultanpuri accident highlights; Delhi court sends five accused to police custody for four days, reports PTI
Kanjhawala accident updates, January 5, 2023: The woman, identified as 20-year-old Anjali Singh, was hit by a grey Baleno car and dragged for about 12 kilometres from Sultanpuri to Kanjhawala in the early hours of New Year's day. Forensic report has stated she suffered 40 injuries in her body.
The horrific death of a 20-year-old woman in Delhi, who was hit and dragged by a car for nearly 12 kilometres after midnight when it was already New Year's day, has triggered massive uproar across the national capital. Identified as Anjali Kumar, the woman was hit by a grey Baleno car that had five men inside, who have been arrested. A CCTV footage of the incident has also surfaced. They told police they had bought alcohol and consumed it while driving to Murthal and back, and that they were unaware of someone being stuck under their vehicle. Police investigation so far has revealed that the two women attended a New Year's Eve party at a hotel and left the venue after midnight. Nidhi said that she fled the accident scene after sustaining minor injuries and did not report the incident to police as she was scared. She divulged details after a CCTV footage extracted by the police investigation team showed her entering her residence at 2.30am.
The incident has triggered a political slugfest between the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) at the opposition, with the former claiming earlier that one of the accused is a saffron camp leader. Delhi deputy chief minister Manish Sisodia visited Anjali's family on Wednesday and assured a job to next of her kin besides the ex gratia of ₹10 lakh already announced by chief minister Arvind Kejriwal. Sagar Preet Hooda, special commissioner of Police (Law and Order) has said that police are probing all angles in the case and will ensure the accused get the “strictest punishment”.
Dissatisfied with police probe, DCW chief wants CBI to take over Kanjhawala case
Delhi Commission for Women chief Swati Maliwal on Thursday expressed dissatisfaction with the Delhi Police's action in the Kanjhawala case and demanded that it be transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).

DCW chief questions Delhi Police about recovering Nidhi's phone, friend of Anjali. Speaking to news agency ANI she said, “I'm not satisfied with Delhi Police's action. I recommend that this case be transferred to CBI. Delhi Police told us they've not recovered Nidhi's phone till now. It's very important evidence,beyond my understanding why is it not with Police till now?”
Nidhi's mother claims allegations against her daughter are 'untrue'
Following the statement given by Nidhi, the friend and eyewitness of the accident, her mother said Anjali's mother is putting “untrue” allegations against her daughter. The statement comes after Anjali's family dismissing the claims of Anjali being in ‘drunken state’ while she was riding scooter. Read more
‘Two more involved tried to protect 5 accused, give misinformation’: Cops, say teams trying to nab them
Delhi Police Special CP Sagar Preet Hooda said on Thursday that the two more men, who have now been found to be involved in the accident, tried to tamper evidence and give misinformation as they were protecting the already arrested five men. “They were friends with the five accused…We're trying to arrest them,” he said. Police rule out link between accused & victim, but say they were aware of body under car
Special CP (L&O) Sagar Preet Hooda said on Thursday at a press conference that no link has been found between the five accused arrested so far in the hit and drag case, and Anjali (victim). He, however, said that the men were aware of a human body under the car. “We are exploring legal process to take this case to a fast-track court,” he added. Read more.

Special CP (L&O) Sagar Preet Hooda said on Thursday that during interrogation of the arrested five accused, it has been revealed that two more men identified as Ashutosh and Ankush are involved in the hit and drag case of Anjali.
Victim's family demands murder charge against 5 accused
The family of Anjali has demanded that a murder charge be invoked against the five arrested men for hitting and dragging her under their car. Bhupendra Chaurasia, who has been helping the family proceedings, told HT they went to Sultanpuri police station on Wednesday night and will be visiting there later in the afternoon to demand the same.
7 men present at party with Anjali, Nidhi questioned by cops
As many as seven men who attended the New Year's Eve party where Anjali and Nidhi were present have been quizzed by Delhi cops pertaining to the case.
Delhi cops, including those from PCR unit, to be questioned
Delhi police personnel, including those from the PCR unit, will be probed as part of the ongoing investigation into the Sultanpuri accident case, to ascertain if any laxity was shown on their part, PTI reported. This comes after it was reported on Wednesday that at least 10 police vehicles, including PCR vans and night patrolling units, were deployed on Sunday night to trace the Baleno car after multiple calls were made to police control rooms from different locations pertaining to the incident.
Victim Anjali and her friend Nidhi knew each other for 15 days
A key witness in the Delhi's Sultanpuri incident, Nidhi, told police that she and victim Anjali had only known each other for 15 days and the December 31st party that they attended at a hotel was the first time they went out together. Read more.
