Three militants were killed as the army foiled a major infiltration bid on Monday along the Line of Control (LoC) in Naugam sector in the frontier district of Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said.

The encounter took place in Naugam after the army noticed suspicious movement, they said.

Handwara superintendent of police Ghulam Jeelani said the gunfight started in the early hours of Monday. “Three militants have been killed and the operation is on,” he said.

The operation which lasted for around 18 hours also led to the recovery of war-like stores that included guns, grenades, magazines, wireless sets and binoculars besides other things, said an army spokesman in Srinagar.

“They (militants) resorted to indiscriminate firing on being detected by the army troops. In the ensuing gun battle, three terrorists were killed. Army troops conducted a massive follow-up search operation lasting over 18 hours, which resulted in recovery of a large cache of war-like stores,” the spokesman said.

This was the third infiltration bid in the past two months in this sector that was successfully foiled by the army.
