A 26-year-old woman and her four-year old daughter drowned to death when their boat capsized after being hit by another boat in Krishna river near Borupalem village of Andhra Pradesh’s Krishna district early on Saturday.

The woman’s husband, however, managed to swim to safety.

According to the police, Nadakuduru Saida Raju, his wife Madhavi and their four-year-old daughter Kavya, from Ibrahimpatnam village in Krishna district, ventured into the river for fishing around midnight on Friday.

After fishing for a couple of hours, they anchored the boat in the river and fell asleep.

Early in the morning, a boat carrying sand rammed into Raju’s boat, causing it to turn upside down. Madhavi and her daughter fell into the river and drowned, but Raju managed to swim to safety.

On reaching the shore, Raju alerted the other fishermen, who in turn informed the Tullur town police. The police swung into action along with National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team and started rescue operations.

After nearly 3–4 hours of search, police recovered the bodies of the mother and the daughter.

The bodies were sent to the local government hospital for post mortem. The police took M Naga Malleshwar Rao, who was steering the sand-laden boat, into custody for questioning.

Thullur police are investigating the case.

This is the third major incident of boat tragedy in Andhra Pradesh recently. On May 15, 22 tribals died when private boat in which they were travelling capsized in the waters due to inclement weather in East Godavari district.

On May 11, 90 tourists had a miraculous escape when their boat caught fire in the middle of Godavari river in the same district, when they were going on a visit to Papikondalu, a famous tourist spot.

On November 12 last year, 21 passengers from Walkers Association of Ongole died in a boat capsize in Krishna river near Ibrahimpatnam when they were crossing the river in the boat to witness a religious ceremony.
