Woman sold newborn that her partner didn’t want, goes on a shopping spree

Police said they have also seized the goods bought by the young couple in Indore including a motor cycle, LED TV, washing machine and refrigerator.

Bhopal: A 23-year-old woman has been arrested in Madhya Pradesh’s Indore for selling her newborn after her live-in partner declined to let her keep the baby, police said on Tuesday. Her partner and five others including a woman from Dewas 40km away who paid ₹5.5 lakh for the baby have also been arrested.

A social activist alerted the police to the possible sale after he noticed that the couple appeared to have gone on a shopping spree and the newborn was no longer with the young couple.

“The social activist informed us that a woman living with a man, a daily wager, gave birth to a baby 15-days ago…. And now, the baby is missing but they have bought a bunch of home appliances and motor cycle,” said Satish Patel of Indore’s Heeranagar police station town inspector.

When police officers probed the case, it turned out that the mother sold her baby to Leena with the help of Pooja, Neelam, Neha and a minor.

Patel added that the mother Shaina Bi, 23, her live-in-partner Anter Singh, three women who brokered the deal, Pooja Verma, Neelam Verma and Neha Suryavanshi, all residents of Indore, and Dewas resident Leena Singh, who bought the baby, and a minor have been arrested under the Juvenile Justice Act which bars illegal adoption.

“Shaina Bi said that she had been living with Anter Singh for the past one year. But when she got pregnant, Anter refused to accept the baby. The woman discussed the matter with her landlord Neha. Neha found a resident of Dewas town Leena with help of Pooja, Neelam and a minor,” the officer said.

Leena told the police that she lost her twins weeks after their birth and wanted adopt a baby. Because the adoption process takes time, she decided to buy the baby, Patel said, citing her statement.
