Senior police superintendent Rohit Singh Shajwan said “misleading” news about riots and imposition of curfew in Bareilly was put out on the two YouTube channels -- RA Knowledge World and Bareilly Production. He added that a case was filed in the matter under Information Technology Act on Monday at Bareilly’s Kotwali police station.
Himanshu Nigam, the police station in-charge, said both the channels aired wrong facts and attempted to disturb the communal situation. Bareilly’s district Magistrate Shivakant said that the administration was keeping a close watch on social media platforms.
The action comes days after at least 40 people were injured in communal clashes in Uttar Pradesh’s Kanpur on Friday last. The clashes erupted after some people called for the closure of shops as part of a protest over alleged objectionable remarks made against the Prophet Mohammad.
