Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli’s fielding effort during their first T20I against Australia in Ranchi drew more than just a customary praise from MS Dhoni, who was left stunned with the effort that resulted in the dismissal of Dan Christian. (IND vs AUS 1st T20I highlights)
The hosts continued to bully the touring Australian team, as they sauntered to a nine-wicket victory (via D/L method) in the series opener played at the JSCA Stadium in Ranchi Saturday night. (IND vs AUS 1st T20I scorecard)
India restricted a new-look Australia to a modest 118 for eight, with Kohli producing what is being termed as a ‘bullet throw’ to dismiss Christian for nine. Kohli’s throw from the deep looked coming straight into his gloves to Dhoni, but little did he realise that it would clip the bails.
In the 19th over of the Australian innings, Christian smacked a delivery from Bhuvneshwar Kumar towards long-on and set off for a run. Kohli, manning the position, put in a sprint towards the ball and threw it towards the strikers’ end — with Australia looking to sneak a second run.
Christian was found way short of his crease but what was surprising to see was Dhoni’s reaction when it all ended with the dismissal of the Australian all-rounder.
Dhoni anticipated the ball to come to him after its first bounce. But the senior cricket had to move his face away quickly as the ball crashed into the top of the wickets, sending the bails flying.
While Kohli appealed and subsequently celebrated for a run-out, Dhoni was seen sporting a wide grin, completely amused with the Indian captain’s accuracy and the strength with which he earned his team a wicket.
India have taken a 1-0 lead in the ongoing three-match T20 series. The second ODI will now be played in Guwahati on October 10, followed by the final game in Hyderabad on October 13.
