10 boatmen abducted by river pirates

As many as 10 boatmen were abducted along with their two boats allegedly by pirates from Matla river in Sundarbans area of South 24 Parganas district.

Police said the incident occurred in the evening when the boatmen were returning to Canning after ferrying in their boats tourists bound for Sundarbans.

Both the boats are mechanised, the police said. Police said they have launched a search for the boatmen, but could not trace them because of the darkness. The river pirates are probably hiding in the forests near the shore, they added.
