10 youngsters killed, 16 injured in road accident in MP

Ten youngsters were killed and at least 16 others were injured when the pick-up truck in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck on Indore-Ichchapur highway in Khandwa district, police said.

Ten youngsters were killed and at least 16 others were injured when the pick-up truck in which they were travelling collided head-on with a truck on Indore-Ichchapur highway in Khandwa district early Monday, police said.

The accident occurred at 3am, some 20km from the district headquarters.

The youngsters were returning home after participating in a garba competition in Kaldiya in Khandwa district when the accident took place, police said.

The truck laden with wheat, was coming from Ujjain and moving toward Hyderabad when it collided with the pick-up truck, said Khandwa superintendent of police Manoj Sharma.

The deceased were identified as Ravi (20), Dependra (19), Mangilal (17), Rohit (12), Ajay (17), Mangal (20), Vijay (25), Sunil alias Sonu (18), Govind (15) and Ravi (20) — all residents of Kodlajagir.

Khandwa collector MK Agrawal and Khargone collector Neeraj Dubey visited the district hospital where the injured are being treated.

Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced compensation of Rs 1 lakh for the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the injured, Dubey said.

The truck driver fled after the accident, said Chegaon Makhan police station in-charge Sharif Khan.

The bodies of the deceased have been handed over to their family, said Khan.
