After the handsome initial surge, the benchmark index sheds some of the gains due to weakness in auto stocks.

The benchmark index Sensex sheds some of the morning gains in early afternoon trade on the Bombay Stock Exchange on Wednesday due to selling in heavyweight auto scrips.

The BSE-30 share index, which had risen about 150.26 in the morning on the back of good second quarter results posted by IT bellwether Infosys Technologies, was trading at 12,429.29, up 65.52 points at 12.30 pm.

Similarly, the Nifty index on the wide-based National Stock Exchange was up by 15.55 points at 3586.60.

Major Gainers: Infosys Technologies (Rs 1,990.15), TCS, (Rs 1,047.15), Satyam Computers (Rs 417.65), Wipro (Rs 531.50), Housing Development Finance (Rs 1,439.70), HDFC Bank (Rs 948) and Bharti Airtel.
