Thirteen Indians have been charged in Jordan with pre-meditated murder in the stabbing death of two compatriots allegedly over repayment of a debt.
One person was critically injured in the brawl that occurred on Saturday night in Maysaloun Park in Jabal Hussein in the Jordanian capital Amman.
Sources at Indian embassy in Amman said those charged and the victims were legally staying in the country and were engaged in construction, maintenance and farming jobs.
The 13 were charged with pre-meditated murder on the basis of the statement of the injured person, who is being treated in a local hospital.
Those involved in the incident hailed from Punjab and neighbouring states, the embassy sources said.
Criminal Prosecutor Amjad Kurdi was quoted by 'Jordan Times' as saying that the fight occurred over financial issues.
"One of the victims owed one of the suspects around Rs 42,000 ruppees and was unable to pay him back."
The person kept demanding his money and asked some of his friends to accompany him and meet the victim to discuss the matter, Kurdi said.
Armed with knives, blades and other sharp objects, the 13 suspects asked the victim and two of his friends to meet them at the park, he said.
Kurdi added, "a violent quarrel ensued and the three men were allegedly stabbed repeatedly by the suspects."
Kurdi said the suspects involved in the brawl were immediately detained, but only one confessed to the double homicide, adding, "we disregarded his confession and depended on the sole survivor who informed us that all 13 men took part in stabbing incident."
